KATTAMANCHI LAKE- THE CROWN BEAUTY OF CHITTOOR IN MAKING

1. First visible developmental activity of chittoor.

2. Chennai based consultancy gave report for project feasibility and bioremediation.

3. The tankbund around the lake is already strengthened and provided with butterfly lighting.

4. Drains flowing into lake are diverted. As already the lake is filled with silt and lake weed, draining of the lake completely and refilling with fresh water is under process.

5. Gardening around the lake along with seating arrangements will be taken up by inviting tenders.

6. Boating and tourist amenities are to be created in PPP mode.

Kattamanchi lake beautification will directly affect the image of Chittoor as it abetts the important RTC bus station, Railway Station etc.

Once the project is completed, it surely will change appearance of chittoor to some extent

P.S:
But entire project is being funded by corporation. Hope govt gives some support like it does to other cities.

  3. Well I really doubt their intentions.....I recently came to know that the in the lake beautification a hole has been done to the lake....The reason being that the whole water in the lake would be vacated by diverting it to neeva river and new and clean water will be pumped to the lake .....I repeat.....New and clean water will be pumped to the lake which is located in a drought hit city....I already observed that the water level in the lake has come down due to the hole in the lake.....

  4. Detailed explanation of why kattamanchi water is left out.

Initially SEED India, Chennai was selected to submit the feasibility report which included biological chemical rehabilitation.

The introduction of an excessive amount of contaminants and nutrients (notably nitrogen and phosphorus) into an aquatic ecosystem causes a proliferation of algae. Some algae grow on carbon sources, but many utilize excess N and P. Decomposing algae consumes a great deal of oxygen, endangering fish and other aquatic animals. Eutrophication occurs most often in ecosystems where water is renewed very slowly, such as deep lakes. Untreated sewage and agricultural runoff flowing into a lake or stream may result in
eutrophication. A eutrophic body of water is one rich in dissolved nutrients, such as phosphates (-PO4-3) from detergents, fertilizers, and manure. Because of the high concentration of dissolved nutrients, algae will typically proliferate, die, and sink to the bottom. Here, their decomposition by bacteria requires a great deal of oxygen - i.e. the BOD goes up. If oxygen levels drop too low, the oxygen-requiring organisms, like fish, might be killed. In fact, some eutrophic lakes may become anaerobic (with all the aerobic life dying) if the BOD becomes too high.

There are two options to clear this. One is building an exclusive sewage treatment plant, which includes high cost and maintainenece.

Second option is to clear the lake of dirty and polluted water and treat it with bio chemicals and refilling with ground water or rain water.

Second option was considered feasible and they are proceeding accordingly.

    1. Well I am not contradicting you with the cleaning process which you menctioned "Bioremidiation".This process is suitable for places where they have abundant water.
Normally most of the western countries have abundant snow which melt in summer so they have developed this technology.Lets come to the options which you have menctioned

      1)Excessive sewage treatment plant
2)Clear the lake of dirty and polluted water and treat it with bio chemicals and refilling with ground water or rain water.

Since you ruled out option 1 and considered option 2,I will try to throw more light on option 2.You menctioned in fb that the area of kattamanchi tank is 74.01 acres
      and 13.85 mts.I did a quick math and 74.01 acresX15 mts would give a volume of 299467 sqmts *15 mts = 449205 cubic mts = 449205000 lts of water.For an approximation
lets take it as 45 crore lts of water. There would be evoparation of water in the lake and when a dry lake is filled with water the water goes into aquifiers and fills
it.I dont have precise data of the water losses due to these things though they make a considerable influence in water losses. You have menctioned that the water in the
lake would be filled with rain or ground water. The annual rainfall of chittoor is around 800 mm though this year we had heavy torrentail rain so it neared 1200mm.
Considering the statistics available it is considered that for a 1000mm rainfall we can trap to maximum of 1 lakh lts in 1000sqft.For chittoor conditions it would be
80k lts and ctr doesnt have torrential rainfall and we have rainfall spread round the year.So trapping 80k lts wouldnt be possible.I would take 40-50% effeciency which
implies that only 40000 lts would be harvested for ctr conditions. So for harvesting water a catchment area of 2516 acres is required and water
is harvested only when the catchment area is concrete flooring or anyother type where water can be trapped else the water just goes down the earth or gets evaporated.
My question is where will ctr municipality find 2516 acres to fill water to this lake and how will they transport water to this lake if it is emptied for beutification.
Now these are the technicalities and lets come to reality. There are many lakes in and around in like kanipakkam,Aragonda...etc...I have been seeing these lakes since
childhood and I am 30 years old and I have seen water in these lakes this year to due to heavy torrential rainfall in december (around 300 mm in single month).
and it was before 10 years when there was heavy torrentail rainfall then.So in my lifetime of 30 years I have seen water only thrice in these lakes. If you
drain the lake to clear the silt you have to wait for another 10 years to fill it with rainwater and I am pretty sure the project of cleaning the lake wouldnt be for
more than 5 years. If a lake is dry for a certain period the invading variety of plants (fondly called as congress plants) would invade the lake and they are renowned
to trap all the ground water and in 10 years many things are probable like change of governments...etc.So only god knows if the project would be successful.

    2. Coming to ground water. At current trends of motor depths in ctr,ppl go to a maximum of 800 ft to get water and if they get water for 3 hours a day from this motor
they are really lucky. And ctr muncipality is supplying water for just 2-3 hours a day and in summer its a gods blessing to get this also.Lakes recharge ground water
table and kattamanchi lake recharges the ground water table of many areas in ctr. When the water is drained from the lake all the bores in these areas would dry up and
the muncipality has to bear the additional burden of supplying water to these areas.I need not talk further but you can infer the reality of the statement "filling the
      lake with ground water".

The lake is defenitely polluted but the option proposed is defenitely not a good option and we have to look for other alternatives. If the MLA and muncipality administration
is serious they can post the project report public and ask for public opinion.

If you possess the complete project report please post it in manachittoor and we can discuss more.Until then its my humble request not to promote this in social media or
      your blog.

Since many innocent peoples are killing by road accidents but nobody taken steps to widen d roads as needed. If they met vth accident, then sure they will realize the importance of roads in chittoor. Pls everybody pray for this.
