Chittoor: At last the traffic menace in Chittoor city was solved with the municipal authorities and police forcibly removing the encroachments in many places. Chittoor Municipal Commissioner Sachidananda Varma said that encroachments were removed in Ponniamman Koil Street, Church Street and Hospital Road, paving the way for free passage of the public as well as vehicles.
Speaking to The Hans India at Chittoor on Saturday, Sugalies (Banjarans) have occupied two thirds of the bus station against the instructions of higher authorities and hawkers and fruit vendors occupied Ponniamman Koil Street creating heavy traffic jam, he said. "Chittoor DSP Rajeswara Reddy, Urban CI Sudhakar Reddy along with Chittoor MLA CK Babu finalized an action plan to clear the traffic hindrances in the city despite pressures. The encroachments by Sugalis and shops of petty vendors are forcibly evicted," he added.
In a move to beautify the city, water fountains were constructed at the Municipal Office, Gandhi Circle, MSR Cross Roads and other key points. Sale of plastic is strictly banned in the city, the Commissioner added.
He further said modern street lights were installed in the entire city, night sweeping has been undertaken in a big way, big drainages were constructed, digital banners were removed and movement of autorikshaws on the main streets has been restricted.
He felt an absolute need to develop Chittoor Corporation with parks, tourist spots, underground drainages and others. He said, "Chittoor City Beautification Committee has been constituted and the District Collector declared Rs 2 crores for beautifying the city. There are proposals to establish boat club also."
The well decorated Municipal Auditoriums is kept ready for inauguration by the Chief Minister.
