The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee has criticised the State government for its decision to scrap the Chittoor drinking water project.
The project was taken up after securing necessary clearances and approvals and the government had spent money on it.
The government should rectify the lapses if any it noticed in implementation of the project rather than unilaterally scrapping it, APCC vice-president S. Sailajanath said.
The previous Congress government had approved the Rs. 7,400 crore project and works were commissioned after selecting the implementing agency through competitive bidding.
The TDP government's decision to set aside the project was meaningless and it owed an explanation to people on the rationale behind cancelling the project, he said.
In spite of his tall claims on the development of Rayalaseema, the Chief Minister had ensured that the region did not get the capital, High Court and other institutions. Cancellation of the drinking water project designed to cater to needs of his native district exposed his real intentions, Dr. Sailajanath said adding that the government should clarify on the charges that the project was cancelled following the insistence of a TDP leader.
The APCC leader criticised the Chief Minister for focussing more on serving his vested interests rather than the interests of the State. The government's admission of irregularities in the sale of sand and other issues was reflective of the state of affairs in the State.
The Chief Minister should at least now focus his attention on the State's requirements including the crucial special category status, he added.
